Sometimes, stress can be beneficial to develop the skills needed to adapt to new situations and deal with unfavorable situations. Many adolescents could able to manage the stressors.

The stressors often come from outside sources, such as family, jobs, friends, or school. Many a time it is from within also. Some of the situations like natural disasters, emergencies, epidemics, family disputes, and other conflicts are vulnerable to mental illness. If not recognized and managed, these feelings can lead to mental illness.

  • 1/10 children aged 5-16 have a diagnosable condition.
  • Half of all mental illness begins by the age of 14, but most cases go undetected and untreated.
  • 3/4 of all mental health problems are established by the age of 24.
  • In adolescents, the depression is the third cause of burden of diseases.
  • Half of all mental health problems in adulthood have their onset during or before adolescence.
  • Approximately 1 in 5 adolescents experience mental and behavioral problems in any given year.

Internet Addiction and Mental health of young people

Internet use has changed entirely over the last 18 years. Almost 6% of the world population has an internet addiction. Though the excessive use of the internet is an understudied phenomenon it may be strongly linked to compulsive behavior and addiction.

While undoubtedly the internet brings many benefits, it can also bring additional pressures, as connectivity to virtual networks at any time of the day and night grows.

According to the new study, people who use the internet excessively may have more mental health problems. Scientists surveyed 254 students and correlated internet use with general mental health and wellbeing. 33 of the students met screening criteria for internet addiction. However, 107 students met the criteria for problematic internet use.

The study compared the areas such as symptoms of depression and anxiety, impulsiveness, inattention, and executive functioning, as well as tests for ADHD. It demonstrates that people who have an addiction to the internet develop higher amounts of depression and anxiety symptoms. They also develop problems with planning and time management as well as ADHD symptoms.

Are we grossly underestimating the prevalence of internet addiction?  And secondly are these other mental health issues a cause or consequence of this excessive reliance on the internet?
